Severe vitamin D deficiency and chondrosis are very common in children with congenital ichthyosis. A case series study published in pediatrics showed that six of the seven children with congenital ichthyosis and severe vitamin D deficiency had nearly normal skin at one month after treatment with vitamin D. Severe vitamin D deficiency and chondrosis are very common in children with congenital ichthyosis. The researchers reported an accidental observation that children with congenital ichthyosis showed significant and excellent clinical efficacy in skin scale and stiffness after short-term high-dose vitamin D supplementation. Seven children with congenital ichthyosis (five autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis; two epidermolysis ichthyosis) and severe vitamin D deficiency (and / or rickets) were given oral vitamin D3 under monitoring at 60000iu per day for 10 days. All children were then given the recommended daily dose of vitamin D3 maintenance therapy of 400 to 600 IU per day. The main outcome of the observation and study was the reduction of limb skin scale and stiffness. All children had severe vitamin D deficiency (serum concentration < 4 ng / ml) and secondary hyperparathyroidism. Six of them had clinical and radiological evidence of rickets. The skin scales of 6 of the 7 children were significantly improved on the 5th day of treatment, and the treatment effect was further strengthened on the 10th day of treatment. At 1 month, the skin of all children with autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis was close to normal. A significant reduction in limb stiffness was also observed in all children. For children with congenital ichthyosis with vitamin D deficiency, it may be an effective way to supplement high-dose vitamin D and continue to give the recommended daily dose of vitamin D.
